It is in the heart of the Marche countryside, a few kilometers from Cingoli (MC) – one of the most beautiful villages in Italy – that two Milanese freelancers, husband and wife, have decided to change their lives. The colors and scents of an old ruined hamlet, skilfully restored to its former glory and transformed into a hotel that combines the charm of the landscape with that of history, inspired the idea of abandoning the chaotic metropolitan daily life.

Consisting of three completely redeveloped units – the farmhouse, the chicken coop and the tool shed – Borgo della Spiga (www.borgodellaspiga.it) is today a welcoming and hospitable country house, a structure strongly linked to the natural rhythm of the earth and at the same time state-of-the-art, as it is equipped with architectural and technological solutions that respect the planet (photovoltaic panels, rainwater collection tanks and LED lighting). While favoring integration with the original context of insertion, the ambitious recovery project, which lasted over five years, led to the complete redefinition of the structures both from an architectural and functional point of view. The large farmhouse, with its large rooms all overlooking the surrounding countryside, has in fact been converted into a B&B, while the tool shed, entirely rebuilt, has been transformed into two fully equipped lofts for rent of 42 square meters each.

The old chicken coop, used as a private home, represents the intimate heart of the village, the only space that the owners have chosen to reserve entirely for themselves. The natural colors that dominate the exterior of the building strengthen the link with the rural soul of the entire complex, characterized by pavements in terracotta, plasters with a material effect and exposed brick. Although revisited in a contemporary key, the interiors tell of a precise stylistic choice, aimed at preserving the harmony of the surroundings through neutral tones, clean lines and essential finishes, in a sort of refined minimalism.

The protagonist of the living area is light, which amplifies heights and dimensions, giving the spaces not only greater airiness, but also a refined chromatic cohesion. Entirely covered with Woodco’s Impression parquet, with hand-planed Kalika boards, the floors connect the different rooms, defining the character of the entire home. Through the large knots and marked cracks, in fact, the oak surfaces on the one hand give the interiors a warm and suggestive atmosphere and on the other evoke the characteristic signs of the passage of time and the passing of the seasons, as if to tell the story of the ancient history of the village.

In the master bedroom, whose magnificent wooden supporting beams have been restored and repainted, the materiality of the Impression boards enhances by contrast the urban-chic echoes of the wallpaper and lacquered accessories, outlining a mixture of atmospheres between country and the contemporary. In line with the green philosophy that has inspired and continues to inspire the entire village, the Osmo oil-wax finish of the tables guarantees a dry residue composed exclusively of natural oils, giving completely non-toxic surfaces, a further homage to the uncontaminated surrounding nature.
